Effective Communication with PECS

This foundational course, Effective Communication, explores the art and science of conveying messages clearly, concisely, and persuasively. Students will gain an understanding of various communication channels, including verbal and nonverbal methods, and examine how cultural, social, and psychological factors shape communication dynamics.

Additionally, the course introduces the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), a visual communication method designed to support individuals in exchanging pictures or symbols to express their needs and ideas. Students will learn how PECS works, including its structured six-phase progression—from single picture exchanges to more complex sentence structures. The course also covers practical aspects, such as the use of a portable communication book to store and organize pictures for easy access and exchange.

By the end of the course, students will develop a comprehensive understanding of both traditional and alternative communication methods, equipping them with the skills to communicate effectively across diverse contexts and populations.
